Chapter Thirteen

Jimmy picked up Dean’s gun and shoved it in his shoulder holster before hauling Mia to her feet. His hand clamped over her elbow, and he dragged her across the lawn to where Karl still lay in a heap…though he was moaning, and his eyes blinked slowly.

“Pistol whipped,” he muttered. “Figures. Dean never was much on shooting. Come on, Karl, you great lump, get up.”

Jimmy kicked him lightly in the shin then reached down into the man’s shirt pocket and pulled out a handful of zip ties. Spinning Mia around, he wrestled her other arm behind her and secured her wrists together at the small of her back.

How was it possible that for the second time in her life a man was zip tying her?

“I need to help Dean,” she pleaded.

Jimmy sighed and pushed her forward until she was walking. He guided her back to Dean who was bent over and clutching his left arm to his body. Dean rocked back and forth ever so slightly as though soothing himself.

“Lemme see,” Jimmy said, pulling Dean’s right arm away.

“You shot me, you stupid son of a bitch,” Dean said through clenched teeth.

“Shoulda stopped when I told you,” Jimmy said without sympathy. “You’ll be fine. I aimed for your shoulder, and I’m a good shot.”

“We should try and stop the bleeding,” Mia said.

“Later.” He reached down and took Dean’s good arm and helped him to his feet. “You two stand right there and don’t move, or I’ll shoot you again.”

“Dean, oh my God,” Mia whispered. “Are you okay?”

“It hurts like hellfire, and it’s still bleeding pretty steady,” he said, his voice roughened and his breathing uneven. “Where’s Roman?”

Mia exhaled. “I sensed him out on the street a few minutes ago but now…I don’t know. He’s probably watching and trying to figure out how to get to us. Too bad you took away his guns.”

Dean didn’t respond. He stood with his head down, breathing through his nose and holding his left arm across his stomach while blood dripped from the elbow. She glanced over to Jimmy and saw he’d managed to get Karl on his feet and walking an unsteady line back toward them.

“What will they do with us?” she asked.

“No idea. Hopefully, I can convince them I didn’t throw in with Danny.”

“Let’s go,” Jimmy said, taking Mia’s elbow and guiding her toward the driveway beside the nearest house.

She stared up at the darkened windows wondering how on Earth no one heard gunshots or noticed four people scrambling through the back yards. What would happen if she screamed? Probably Jimmy would shoot her in the shoulder same as he’d done to Dean. She wondered if Dean still had his cell phone.

“Okay, princess. Move it. We don’t have all night.” Jimmy poked her in the back with the gun, and she shot forward.

When they reached the sidewalk, Mia’s eyes flicked left and right hoping to see Roman, but the street was empty. Karl grumbled that his head hurt. A thud sounded, Dean cried out, and Jimmy glanced back and growled in his throat.
